Friday morning we had made plans to go horseback riding with the Telluride cowboy & legend Roudy. About 12 years ago my dad, siblings, and some of the Zintaks did an overnight pack trip with him that we never forgot! Roudy is certifiably nuts.
A pic from our trip 12 years ago:
Roudy has been in a Warren Miller movie and on TV, etc. Here are some clips of him:
He was also supposed to run the transportation for a very high profile wedding- The niece of George W. Bush, Lauren, to Ralph Lauren's son! BUT, the night before he broke 6 ribs & collapsed a lung. So they just used his horses:
The wedding took place at Double RL ranch- Ralph & Ricky Lauren's 17,000 acre ranch just outside of Telluride. You pass it on the way home or to the airport but you can't see their house from the road. Here are some pics if your interested:
moving on....
I knew I would have a great time, even if we didn't get on horses bc Roudy is so nuts but I was nervous Christian wouldn't appreciate him the way I do.
We headed to Roudy's house (rides are from his home during the winter) around 9:00. He lives in Norwood, CO about 40 min outside of town.
Just as we were driving up his driveway Roudy called to make sure we weren't lost, and to make sure I had clean underwear on in the event of an accident.
Pulling up to the ranch...

All our horses lined up. Another couple joined us as well, and Roudy's wrangler Jessie.
The wranglers have a tough job- Roudy berates them all day. It's so funny but you do feel bad for them. Hopefully they just ignore him. For example if we rode up to a gate that needed to be opened and Jessie didn't ride ahead to open it he would say "Don't you worry about doing your job Jessie, I'll get the gate even though I'm old and thin and weak. Can I get you a drink back there? Are you comfortable?"
Christian bonding with "Big."
My horse "Baby."
Roudy kept telling me how sweet she was.
Funny how he only referred to her as "you witch." Hmm
Off we go...
This pic cracks me up- Roudy looks so distorted.
Christian rode right behind Roudy and got to listen to all his stories and crazy talk. Roudy didn't stop talking once except to yell at poor Jessi. Every 2 minutes Christian would turn around and look at me bug-eyed (I can't believe this guy!) and I would just nod (I know...)
In the end he definitely appreciated him the same way I do.
Here we are finishing up our ride. Roudy is talking about being a felon, and someone asking him "If your committing felonies but not getting caught are you still in the club?" to which he responded "I'm the role model."
Champagne
(not sure if he gives this to everyone but the other couple were newlyweds)
Our parting gift:
It was a lot of fun & so glad we did it!
When we got home we got a bite to eat at the house & headed to explore the adorable town a bit.
The famous "free box."
After walking around town for an hour or two we headed home, made some chili, and hung out.
(I won) |
Sitting up on that horse was hard work!!
Another great day in Telluride!
Next up, Day III....
